Random thoughts on "Arrow"

Has anyone heard any rumblings about Felicity the IT girl on "Arrow"?  Because it seems to me that they are positioning her to be the perfect Oracle in this 'verse (if we can call it that).  Sure, she's not Barbara Gordon (when Babs was the awesome disability role model), but this show plays a little fast and loose with comics canon already.  Felicity is smart, skilled with a computer and investigating things, has sass, and has some great chemistry with those she interacts with.

Since we've already got Huntress making her mark on the show, and "Dinah" potentially becoming Black Canary somewhere down the road, it would nicely round out the Birds of Prey group to have an Oracle.  I'd be down for that.

I'm still enjoying the show.  It's getting better, I think.  The reveal of who JB's character was surprised me, and was handled really well.  And the one liners are still hilarious.  Even Dinah (yes, I refuse to call her "Laurel" still) is growing on me.  The actress seems to have gotten better, and she has some real chemistry with Tommy Merlyn (I'm actually routing for them--not a full on ship yet, but getting there).  Hopefully she'll be able to develop some chemistry with Ollie since she's improved so much.

Any else have any thoughts?  Or hear any gossip about IT girl becoming Oracle?

I nit-pick, because I care, damnit!

I've added a new TV show to my list to watch, though I'm having some mixed feelings on it.  "Arrow" has a lot of promise, and I think the actor playing Ollie/(Green) Arrow is doing a decent job of it, and will probably continue to grow into the role.

However...Collapse )

I hope against hope that this will change; that Dinah will start to have a personality and not just be "Rachel Dawes 2.0".  Because if not, then I'm never going to root for her to become Black Canary, and that's a travesty.  At this point, I'm only sticking around to watch Ollie develop (and show of his abs), Merlyn's snark, and John Barrowman (!!!!).  Because there's nothing I like better than a "well-dressed man".
So it's been a while, figured I should probably update on my life and all...

Summer is here!  Hooray for that!  But while work is thankfully really slow (after the crazybusyohmygod May and June we had, I *NEED* it!), my weekends are consumed with me dashing back Up North to visit my parents/help my mom with work/sneak in some Northern Michigan fun.  So if I seem swinging back and forth between frazzled and bored, well, you know why!

It's SDCC week (San Diego Comic Con), which has me glued to my computer.  Oh twitter, facebook and lj, please don't let me down!  I'm eager for some good intel and such.  A bit sad that there won't be a Torchwood panel, since last year's was so fun!  I know, I know, no new season on the horizon, so why have a panel?  But hell, there are so many panels for defunct shows (Firefly, Buffy, etc), so why not?!  Torchwood has a huge cult following in the US!  Oh well, at least I got to see JB earlier this year at C2E2 in Chicago.  And I'm not at SDCC anyways...

I'm getting super pumped for the release of The Dark Knight Rises.  Like I did when The Dark Knight came out a few years ago, my brother and I (and some close friends) are all going to see the midnight showing next Thursday.  I FREAKIN' CANNOT WAIT!!  From all the previews, Catwoman looks to be awesome.  And this movie promises to be epic.  I've stopped reading spoilers and speculation a few months back, just because I want to be surprised and enthralled when I see the movie (and not sitting there going "oh, I think I know what comes next...").  There aren't many movies I make myself adhere to that policy for, but Nolan's Batman movies rank.  (Though I admit to watching the commercials and trailers...and then squealing like a child in delight.  Can't deny myself that)

I've started looking into the whole grad school thing again.  With the lull in work, it gives me time during the day (so long as I'm disciplined enough to stop reading (or re-reading, as the case may be) fanfic--Bad Lar, use that as a reward for making some headway!).  I've taking a multifaceted approach this time.  My goal is to pick 10-12 schools/programs, some with a terminal MA in history/American studies, and some with a Ph'D track in those fields.  I hope to be successful this time around, so if you guys could send good vibes or thoughts or pray or whatever, I'd so appreciate that.  I just, I don't want to live my life in a holding pattern anymore, you know?  And I'm ready, really ready to go back to school and academia.  I know that's where I belong.  I know I'll be happy there, even when I'm frustrated and stressed and everything else.

Okay, so that's the update on me.  :o)  What's going on in your lives?

*I am the girl kicked out of her home because I confided in my mother that I am a lesbian.

*I am the person who is afraid of telling his loving Christian parents he loves another male.

*I am the prostitute working the streets because nobody will hire a transsexual woman.

*I am the sister who holds her gay brother tight through the painful, tear-filled nights.

*We are the parents who buried our daughter long before her time.

*I am the man who died alone in the hospital because they would not let my partner of twenty-seven years into the room.

*I am the foster child who wakes up with nightmares of being taken away from the two fathers who are the only loving family I have ever had. I wish they could adopt me.

*I am one of the lucky ones, I guess. I survived the attack that left me in a coma for three weeks, and in another year I will probably be able to walk again.

*I am not one of the lucky ones. I killed myself just weeks before graduating high school. It was simply too much to bear.

*We are the couple who had the realtor hang up on us when she found out we wanted to rent a one-bedroom for two men.

*I am the person who never knows which bathroom I should use if I want to avoid getting the management called on me.

*I am the mother who is not allowed to even visit the children I bore, nursed, and raised. The court says I am an unfit mother because I now live with another woman.

*I am the domestic-violence survivor who found the support system grow suddenly cold and distant when they found out my abusive partner is also a woman.

*I am the domestic-violence survivor who has no support system to turn to because I am male.

*I am the father who has never hugged his son because I grew up afraid to show affection to other men.

*I am the home-economics teacher who always wanted to teach gym until someone told me that only lesbians do that.

*I am the man who died when the paramedics stopped treating me as soon as they realized I was transsexual.

*I am the person who feels guilty because I think I could be a much better person if I did not have to always deal with society hating me.

*I am the man who stopped attending church, not because I don't believe, but because they closed their doors to my kind.

*I am the person who has to hide what this world needs most, love.

Re-post this if you believe homophobia/transphobia is wrong. Please do your part to end it.

Brief Update

These past few weeks, but this week especially, have been hell.  Work has been crazy ridiculous, and I'm exhausted by the time I get home.  And my weekends haven't been so much with the nice and peaceful, but busy as well.  So I'm sorry if you've posted something and I haven't responded to it.  I have, like, 100 tabs open it seems.  I am trying to work my way through them, I swear.

But things get better after this Thursday.  The legislature in my state goes on break, so that means my job slows down tremendously!  So I will start to make better headway on catching up then.  So bear with me, but if I've missed something you've posted and you want to point me in that direction, please do!  I welcome it, really.

ZOMG! Why isn't it July yet?!?!

I'm so, so pumped after seeing this!  Like really, this is going to be amazing!  My brother and I have already plotted to take that Friday off our respective works so we can go to the midnight showing together (it's a bit of a tradition...well, we did it with "The Dark Knight" and had so much fun, we wanted to do it again with TDKR).  The excitement and atmosphere of being in a theater surrounded by people just as geeked and excited as you are is indescribable.  If you haven't done a midnight showing, you simply must at some point!  It's an experience like no other...and I just know that this one is going to be even more wonderful, since I'm loving what I'm seeing so far of Catwoman.  (As you may recall, Catwoman is one of my favorite characters.  And I had faith that Nolan knew what he was doing in casting Anne Hathaway for the part...because I doubted Heath Ledger and he blew me away.  From what I've seen so far, I think Anne is going to do Selina/Catwoman justice.)

::snort:: So, for those who don't know, I'm a bit of a girl-gamer.  Mainly I like games that make me think and figure things out.  After beating Batman: Arkham City for the 3rd time, including on storymode + (aka "hard level: extra!"), I'm working on getting all the achievements I can.

Well, I just completed the Storyteller achievement with Calendar Man...and low and behold, the final story he tells is of his killing of "Judge Harkness".  ::snorts again::  Seems my fandoms just love to cross over, huh?

Anyone else obsessed with this game?  I'm working on finding all the easter eggs too (found quite a few already, including the Scarecrow barge and the Hush reference in the church and the Black Mask when you begin)!  Or what games do you play?  I'm in love with my xbox ("sexbox", we called 'em in undergrad (before I had one) and I can see why...). What platforms do you use?

(and yes, I know I'm hella overdue with posts on London and C2E2.  I will get to these.  I promise.  I really do.)

Omg, how will I ever catch up?

We have returned from the UK!  It was wonderful, exhilarating, and enthralling.  And I want to go back!

A detailed post will be forthcoming, including pictures, hopefully by this Friday.  But I'm jet-lagged still, and had to go back 250 posts just to tab all the stuff I've missed over the week I was gone (yikes!!!).  And, lest we forget, I'm off bright and early on Saturday morning to attend the C2E2 Convention in Chicago and see John Barrowman(!!!), in addition to exploring the convention and show my brother the city/seeing my best friend.  Well, being busy is good, right?

So for those who've posted over the past week, I'll try to get to your stuff as soon as possible and give you comments!  Just be patient with me, as it's gonna take a bit!

Yay for being home...I guess.  At least work isn't too busy!!
